Sewing School: Creating Opportunities, Restoring Dignity

Mission Colombia believes that every person is created in the image of God and deserves the opportunity to provide for themselves and their family with dignity. Through partnerships with local churches, community leaders, and educational institutions, we seek to meet immediate needs while also creating pathways toward a brighter future.

One of the most exciting examples of this vision is the Sewing School in Puerto Valdivia, Colombia.

The Sewing School was established to provide vulnerable women with practical job skills that can lead to meaningful employment and greater economic stability. In partnership with local leaders and educational organizations, twenty women have begun a fifteen-month training program that will culminate in a recognized certification, equipping them with skills that can be used to secure gainful employment or launch small businesses of their own.

What began as an idea shared around a table has become a reality through the generosity of donors, the hard work of local partners, and God’s faithfulness. Mission Colombia helped fund the renovation and preparation of the facility, including the installation and organization of industrial sewing machines, electrical upgrades, classroom furnishings, and other equipment necessary to create a professional learning environment.

In April 2026, members of the Diocese of Quincy Mission Colombia team traveled to Puerto Valdivia to celebrate a significant milestone: the blessing and dedication of the Sewing School. Together with local clergy, students, community members, and ministry partners, we gathered to give thanks to God for this new opportunity and to pray for the women whose lives will be impacted through the program.

The dedication was a joyful reminder that this project is about much more than sewing machines and classrooms. It is about hope. It is about investing in people. It is about helping women discover their God-given gifts and providing opportunities for them to support their families and contribute to their communities.

As with all Mission Colombia initiatives, the Sewing School reflects our commitment to walking alongside the people we serve—not simply providing resources, but building relationships, encouraging growth, and sharing the love of Jesus Christ.
